It has been a long five years since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Part 2 stunned moviegoers, but magic is finally returning to the silver screen. On November 18th, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released worldwide.
Now many may be skeptical about this new Wizarding World installment- after all, it will not include Harry Potter and will not take place at Hogwarts. Before jumping to conclusions, keep the following in mind:
- The Plot
The film will take place in the same universe as Harry Potter but in a different time period and place- New York City in the 1920s. It will follow Hogwarts student Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne, discussed below) on his trip to New York. Newt accidentally releases some magical creatures into the city, causing many troubles. By his side will be muggle Jacob Kowalski (comedian Dan Fogler), and Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston). The film will delve into the American wizarding world, including a radical faction of muggles bent on eradicating wizards called “The Second Salemers”.
- The Actor
You know that guy who played Marius in 2012’s Les Miserables and was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in 2014’s The Theory of Everything? Well, that actor Eddie Redmayne has the role of protagonist Newt Scamander, the “magizoologist” (person who studies magical creatures) who accidentally lets some of his magical creatures loose in New York City. Redmayne, aside from immersing himself in every role he plays, is a very likable actor who should quickly become a fan favorite. It’s not easy stepping into the shoes of Daniel Radcliffe, but Redmayne should do an exceptional job at playing the film’s charismatic lead.
- The Future
There was recently some huge news regarding the Fantastic Beasts series. J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series and writer of Fantastic Beasts, announced at a Global Fan Event that the movie will be the first of a five film series, two more than the previously announced trilogy. The next film of the series will be released November 2018, with the next in 2020 and so on. In other words, you’ll be hearing about Fantastic Beasts for a long time to come.
- The Excitement
Upper Dublin students are looking forward to catching this new exciting film. Brock Molloy, senior and Harry Potter enthusiast, stated “I am immensely excited for the upcoming release of Fantastic Beasts. I, along with my fellow Potter-Heads, will be attending the midnight premiere. The world of Harry Potter may have come to a close, but J.K. Rowling is opening up an entirely new universe for us to explore.” Brock is not alone. Abbey Haas, a Junior at UDHS and fellow “Potter-Head”, claims “J.K. Rowling takes magic and completely transforms it into something miraculous in the book- soon to be movie – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I personally am a huge fan for all of the wonderful things she has written and it never ceases to amaze me how creative she is. I’m stoked on seeing how this new era in magic runs wild through the hearts of millions of people.”
November 18th will be a magical day for many Upper Dublin students and millions worldwide.
