Although the season is far from over, the Upper Dublin Girls’ basketball team and Coach Funsten already have a lot to be proud of this year. Manager Kyle Lee tells, “The season started off with a few losses, but ever since then we’ve been looking really good and I’m excited for the rest of the year”. With 16 wins and just 4 losses, the girls have definitely carried their momentum from previous years. More importantly, they are 8-0 in conference games and look poised to extend their schedule to postseason play and to take their fourth straight Suburban One League American conference title, something that has never been done by any team before. Highlights of the early season include blowout wins against Bayard Rustin (56-28), Upper Moreland (50-14), Plymouth Whitemarsh (42-22), Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (52-23) and rival Wissahickon (49-17).
Standout players include senior captain Allison Chernow, who will be playing for Emory University’s girls’ team next year, junior Demi Balasa, and sophomore Maggie Weglos. The team’s future is looking extremely bright as well, with amazing talent among the underclassmen, including Meghan Barbera, a freshman who is unfortunately out this season with an injury, and sophomore Nicole Kaiser. Upper Dublin’s success should also be attributed to Funsten, former head coach of the JV boys’ team. When he’s not solving math problems and helping his students, he’s making sure the girls are ready for whatever team they face by practicing plays and going over film.
Overall, the girls have been extremely successful and dominant thus far and show no signs of stopping; make sure to check them out and show your school spirit by coming to their next home game (2/04) against Springfield in the main gym!
