Now with four Grammys at hand, Sam Smith has become an iconic figure in the music industry. Soulful singer Sam Smith was born in London, England on May 19, 1992. He rose to fame in October 2012 with his song “Latch”, featuring Disclosure. In the next year, he produced “La La La” with Naughty Boy, which earned him his first number one single in May. A few months later, Sam won the 2014 BRIT Critics’ Choice Award, along with BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll. Last year, Sam released his debut album, In the Lonely Hour. His most notable singles include: “Lay Me Down”, “Money on My Mind”, “Stay with Me”, and “I’m Not the Only One”. Recently at the 2015 Brit Awards, Sam garnered the award for British Breakthrough Act and Global Success.
The world may see him as an inspiration, but Sam Smith himself is inspired by many musical legends including Adele, Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga (, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. However, Sam Smith is most fanatic about the great Mary J. Blige. At the 57th Grammy Awards, Sam and Mary performed the song that won Sam three Grammys: “Stay with Me”. If you missed out on his performance with Mary, you can check it out here: It is surely a performance that you do not want to miss out on!
In May 2014, Sam revealed to the public that he is gay. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, he stated that he wanted to tell the public before his album came out. He believed that if people knew of his sexual preference, they would have a better understanding of his music. If you would like to check out this video, here is the link: Last year actor and model Jonathan Zeizel broke Sam’s heart. At the 2015 Grammy Awards, Smith said, “I would like to thank the man that this album is about. By breaking my heart, you won me four Grammys!” Although Sam has been very successful, he stated in an interview with Sangita Myska at the 2015 Brit Awards that he really wants a boyfriend (don’t we all!). You can check out this interview here: From the outside, Sam seems to have everything going for him in his life. However, in an interview with 4Music, Sam discussed his struggles with OCD.
One of my personal favorite songs by Sam Smith is “Not in That Way”, which is about one person (probably Sam) loving another, but realizing that the feelings were not mutual. “I’m Not The Only One” is a song you may have heard of on the radio. The music video for the song is very emotional, yet relatable. Check it out here if you haven’t already: “Life Support” and “Like I Can” are other songs from In The Lonely Hour that illustrate Sam’s desire for love. In an interview, Sam stated that his favorite song is “Good Thing” because it conveys a true message from his heart. Take a listen here: Recently Sam has released a new music video for “Lay Me Down”. This song makes a statement about something that Sam feels very passionate about. You can read his YouTube comment and listen to the song here:
Sam Smith’s inspiring, soulful music made me love Sam Smith even before he won four Grammys. The music pulls on your heartstrings, and makes you think of love at a completely different angle. Sam turned a depressing situation (his breakup) into a beautiful album that has brought the world together. Every single one of his songs conveys the message of loving everyone.
