UDHS Bowling: A Hidden Gem

by Jesse Weiner

For many years, students at Upper Dublin High School have been unaware of one of the most unique and interesting sports that UD has to offer. While most sports news at school involves the football team or the basketball team, the bowling team is a team on the rise, and it is unknown by the majority of the school population.

This is probably because of the team’s poor record. The UD boys bowling team has yet to win a match in the 2014-15 season, and has been historically inferior to other teams. Recently, however, the team encountered a bright spot as Junior Andy Katz, the team captain, led the team to a 2-2 tie with Norristown. However, what the team lacks in record is made up for in soul and attitude. The team constantly looks upwards, aiming to break their previous scores even when facing defeat. Steven Field, a bowler on the varsity team, stated “It’s like going out and bowling with friends, but with a little competition added.”

The girls team, on the other hand, sports a solid record this season. When asked about the team, Hannah Lamberg, co-captain of the girls’ team along with Denise Weinberger, exclaimed, “I have been bowling in Upper Dublin on varsity for three years so far, and it is such a tightly bound group of people! The teams (both guys and girls) have really grown close this year, and I hope that more people continue to join in the future!” A highlight of the girls’ season was a 4-0 sweep against Plymouth-Whitemarsh early in January.

The boys team and the girls team each contain 15 bowlers: five on Varsity, five on Junior Varsity, and five on a Practice Squad (JV 2). The team plays their home games at Thunderbird Lanes in Willow Grove on Mondays and Wednesdays. The coach is UDHS math teacher Mr. Morgan, in his second year with the team.

The team does need new bowlers for next year. If you are looking for an enjoyable winter sport to participate in that meets two days a week, come to tryouts next year. For more information about the UDHS Bowling Team, speak with Mr. Morgan or a current UDHS Bowling Team member.
